Wow, judging by that gauge cluster that thing must be approaching 20 years old... Which of course means that even if it has some anemic 4 pot in it, that MPG number is still very much an aspirational dream and not a reality.

Wow, you are pretty far off on everything.

It's 14 years old and has a decently strong NA 3.8l V6.

30mpg is not even close to unheard of for highway mileage in one of these, just highly unlikely because the mods I've done haven't been kind to its fuel efficiency.

14 is approaching 20. Yes I'm closer to 20 than it but it still is.

What was the actual millage you're calculating at the pump? Every car I've ever had that calculates MPG is always off. Some of the more recent ones have been a bit better, but they still lie, of course they always inflate the number and never underestimate, but I'm sure that surprises nobody.

This happened after 30 minutes of perfectly level 60mph cruising right after a fillup, so it was probably accurate. By the time I filled up again the predicted mileage was down to 21 and actual was 19.7mpg

Ok, see now that all sounds much more like the expected economy out of an older V6... While it would be nice to average near 30 with that displacement, weight, drive train loss, aero and other factors for a cars its age, averaging 30 for the whole tank is probably never going to happen. Nice to know that you can get that much on the highway though. My current car gets somewhere between 13-17, so you're almost double where I'm at depending how you look at it.

My Cavalier gets about 22. My neighbour (who drives a new civic) claimed my mileage is "horrible" but honestly it seems fine to me.

It's pretty awful when you consider my 14-year-old car gets at least 28, even if I drive it like it's stolen.

Yeah well the new civic is advertised as as something like 29/41 for fuel economy which is great. Which is impressive until you consider the following. In 1986 my father bought an absolutely stripped, no-options Honda civic hatchback brand new for $6800. That car got 45 MPG in 1986!!!! It also had a lawn mower sized engine and couldn't get out of its own way. Honda civic's are great cars, but exciting to drive and powerful they are not. (Yes please chime in dear Honda owner how your V6 something or other Honda is fast) Back to reality, Honda's are slow accelerating, usually have soggy brakes, and can't handle worth a damn. The trade off is great fuel economy and honestly the cars are super reliable. My point is enjoy your American made car, be proud you are supporting our industry even though you didn't buy it new, and who cares what MPG it gets. If its not making you go broke by driving it then what does it matter.

I have always been a car guy. One thing I told myself early on is that I will save money in many areas of my lifestyle, but fuel will not be one of them. I currently have 2 cars that are absolutely hideous on fuel economy. Why? Well one is fast and the other is an SUV and my wife loves it. It is just one of those things that I have allowed myself as a luxury and the excuse I have always used is that I'm a car guy. If I wasn't I'm sure I would have something very fuel efficient and economical.

My first car was a $2300 1988 Ford Probe that I bought with over 100k miles on it. Had faded paint, was generally crusty, and it did not get good fuel economy despite the 2.4L 4 cylinder engine. It was however a 5-speed and I loved the crap out of that car. It even had one of those 80's digital dashboards where the speedo only went up to 85 MPH and then started blinking. LOL.

28 is a lot what are you driving? I think the 2014 civic is rated for 28.

I'm guessing your father's 86 didn't weigh very much!

When I get a bit richer and am done school I am going to try for a land yacht. Someing like a full sized 1974 Cadillac. MPG be damned! I had an oppo-tunity for a 77 Lincoln a while ago about I was driving over 30 miles a day and could barely afford gas as it was so I didn't pull the trigger. I regret it, but it was probably wise.

Yeah I'm not sure about the exact number, but that civic weighed nothing. Funny idea on the land yacht. My best experience in one of those was a buick 88 or something like that one my buddy's fathers owned. I can't remember the exact model these days. Except it wasn't from 1988 it was far older, maybe from like 68 or something. In any case it had a 454 motor in it, but somehow it was only 1 wheel drive?!? Don't ask I don't know. I do know one thing, when he'd drop the hammer that one wheel would deliver evil amounts of power and would lift up the front left of the car. It got something like 6 MPG it was THAT bad.

I think your dad's Buick had a problem in it's open differential. It was probably pushing all the power to one side due to some mechanical failure on the right side. (I think). I could be totally wrong though who knows for sure. Such a problem would effectively make it one wheel drive though.

6 MPG is what a modern fully laden (77,000 lbs) tractor trailer gets these days, so I agree that is horrendous fuel economy.

It is horrendous and there is no argument there, but there are modern vehicles that are terrible too. My buddy's M6 V10 used to get 11-14. My CLS55 AMG gets about 13-17. My other friend's Raptor gets about 8-11. These are all modern machines. Terrible. But that's the price for horsepower based fun.
